Great Blue Heron Comes For A Visit!

September 6, 2013 4:43 pm

It’s a beautiful day in Litchfield. Fall is beginning to show herself with temperatures in the low 40s last night and a crisp, clear 65 today. As I sat in the gallery this afternoon, my eye constantly being drawn to the big window that looks out over the property, I was amazed to see this majestic creature soar gracefully and land on our roof.

She (or he) stayed for a goodly amount of time and stood straight and tall on the peak of the roof surveying the surroundings. The Iroquois Native American tribe has always felt that if a Great Blue Heron spends time in your area it is a lucky sign and very good omen. We’ll take that!! They also believe it is a sign that you are working with the elements of Mother Nature rather than struggling against her. As Daniel has always considered every tree a gift from nature, not to be squandered, and has always felt a need to use each piece of wood in the best way possible I believe this blue heron was letting us know that Mother Nature approves of how we use one of her most precious resources.

Lots of progress this week on the big leaf maple natural edge table we talked about earlier. So far it has three coats of finish. Next week it will get a few more and hopefully I can post some photos by the end of next week.

We went on a wood buying trip on Wednesday and hit three different lumberyards. Unfortunately we did not find the perfect slab for a project we have in mind to debut at the Washington Craft Show in November but we did stumble upon some outstanding black walnut and African ribbon cut mahogany. We will keep searching for that slab!
